INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) reported a 28 percent drop in third-quarter profit Thursday, but the insurer also reassured Wall Street with a performance that met or surpassed expectations in several areas.
Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth said net earnings fell to $920 million, or 75 cents per share, in the quarter ending Sept. 30, down from $1.28 billion, or 95 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. NEW YORK (AP) -- Airlines shares rose in a choppy market Thursday, lifted by falling oil prices, positive outlooks and optimistic analyst comments.In afternoon trading, the AMEX Airline Index rose 10.7 percent, with all 14 component stocks on higher ground. Crude oil was down $4.88 at $70 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Continental and Southwest are the latest carriers to report third-quarter losses, following earnings reports from Delta and American parent AMR on Wednesday.
