Sprint Nextel Expands Unlimited Calling and NII 3Q Profit Rises 24 Percent

NII Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq:NIHD), a mobile communication provider to businesses in Latin America, recently said third-quarter earnings rose 24 percent on a sharp increase in new customers. Net income climbed to $81.6 million, or 46 cents per share, from $65.7 million, or 38 cents per share, in the year-ago period. The latest period included a charge of $22 million related to a debt offering. Excluding that, earnings came in at $104 million, or 61 cents per share.
Shares of Vodafone Group (NYSE: VOD) recently advanced in London as investors assessed better-than-expected quarterly sales from rival France Telecom. The 6.5% rise in Vodafone shares came after France Telecom , which operates in the U.K. mobile phone market under the Orange brand, reported a market-beating sales rise of 3.3% in the third quarter. Morgan Stanley analysts called the group's 7.3% increase in U.K. mobile revenues a "positive surprise."
