US Farms, Inc. Formalizes Membership with San Diego Farm Bureau and Bunge Net Profit More than Doubles

U.S. biotech giant Monsanto (NYSE: MON) expressed its deep disappointment recently after French President Nicolas Sarkozy decided to suspend the planting of GMO crops pending a full appraisal of the issue. In a statement, Monsanto said Sarkozy's move was "incomprehensible" and that the company's GMO technology helped fulfil the very environmental goals of France -- to reduce pesticide use and economise on water.

Agriculture and fertilizer company Bunge Ltd. (NYSE: BG) recently said that its third-quarter net profit more than doubled to $351 million, or $2.70 a share, from $169 million, or $1.40 a share, a year earlier. Net sales rose 82% to $12.68 billion. Analysts had forecast earnings of $1.77 a share on revenue of $9.47 billion. Bunge said its agriculture business improved across the board and its fertilizer unit continued to perform strongly.

The chief financial officer of avocado distributor Calavo Growers Inc. (Nasdaq:CVGW) sold 35,831 shares of common stock under a prearranged trading plan, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. In a recent Form 4 filed with the SEC, Arthur J. Bruno reported he sold the shares Thursday for $20.51 to $21.15 apiece. The stock sale was conducted under a prearranged 10b5-1 trading plan which allows a company insider to set up a program in advance for such transactions and proceed with them even if he or she comes into possession of material non-public information.
