(NASDAQ: CVGW), a worldwide leader in packing and distributing of fresh and processed avocados and other perishable food products, recently announced that its board of directors declared a $0.35 per share annual cash dividend on its common stock. The annual payment reflects an increase of 9 percent over last year and a 75 percent rise since Calavo became publicly traded in 2002. Seed company Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON) recently raised its fiscal 2008 earnings guidance and said it expects first-quarter profit above Wall Street expectations as demand for its seed and trait products grows. The company expects to earn 35 cents per share in the first quarter, more than double what it earned during the same quarter in 2007. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial, on average, forecast earnings of 19 cents per share.
Shares of Corn Products International Inc. (NYSE: CPO), which makes corn-based ingredients for food and industrial products, climbed recently after a BB&T Capital Markets analyst upgraded the shares and called the stock's valuation "very compelling." Analyst Heather L. Jones raised her rating on the shares to "Buy" from "Neutral" following a 25 percent decline in the company's share price since it reported its third-quarter financial results Oct. 29. Corn Products said its profit rose 38 percent, but most of that rise was due to a one-time gain from its stake in Chicago Board of Trade Holdings Inc., which combined with Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. in July to form CME Group Inc.
